The Online Options tab in Category Setup controls how a Category and its Areas are displayed and behave when booked Online.
Overview
Each Category in RMS has an Online Options tab that determines whether the Category is available for online bookings, how many Areas to hold back from online availability, what Area selection charges apply, and the amenity details made available to connected channels.
Please Note! RMS is highly configurable. Some Terminology, User Access & Permissions, Images, Labels, and Functions used in these articles may differ from your setup. CLICK HERE to find out more.
Accessing Category Online Options
In the side menu of RMS, go to Setup > Category/Area.
- Select 'Edit' on an existing Category.
- Navigate to the 'Online Options' tab.
Online Availability
These settings control whether the Category appears online and how much inventory is exposed to guests.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Available to RMSOnline | Enables the Category to be booked through online channels. When unticked, the Category will not appear in online search results across all online channels, including the RMS Booking Engine, Guest Portal, and any connected channels. This setting applies to every Category Class that can be sold online, including Dock Categories, which display in the RMS Booking Engine search results alongside Accommodation and Site Categories. |
| No Of Area to Hold from RMSOnline | The number of Areas within this Category to hold back from RMS Online availability. For example, if a Category has 10 Areas and this is set to 1, only 9 will appear as available online. Holding back Areas creates a buffer to prevent scenarios that could result in a Quote Reservation, while keeping those Areas available to sell in-house. This setting applies to both the RMS Booking Engine and connected channels. For more information, see Hold back areas from the Booking Engine. |
Tip! Where a property has two or more Category Classes available online, the RMS Booking Engine shows a filter option for each of those Classes so guests can narrow the search results to the type of space they want. For more information, see Category Class options in RMS.
Area Details
These fields hold amenity and capacity information for the Category. They are not read by the RMS Booking Engine and do not display on it. They are made available to some connected channels only, and what each channel reads and displays varies between channels.
Important! These fields do not display on the RMS Booking Engine. They are made available to some connected channels only, and support varies between channels. Confirm with each individual channel which of these fields it reads and how it displays them.

Area Selection - Category
These settings configure whether a fee is applied when a guest selects a specific Area on the RMS Booking Engine using the Interactive Map, or when a staff member sets a reservation to Fixed.
Please Note! If both a Category and an Area have Area Selection fees configured, the Area-level configuration takes precedence. For full configuration details and steps, see Area Selection Fees and Fixed Reservations.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Sundry Charge | Select the Sundry Charge to apply when a guest selects a specific Area during an online booking. Leave blank if no charge applies. |
| Fee Type |
Determines how the Area Selection charge is calculated:
|
| No Greater Than $ | Sets a maximum dollar cap on the Area Selection Surcharge. Applies when using the percentage fee type to prevent the charge from exceeding a set amount. |
| Ask to Apply Site Selection Charge When Fixing a Reservation | When ticked, RMS will prompt staff to apply the Area Selection charge when manually setting a reservation to Fixed. For more information, see Area Selection Fees and Fixed Reservations. |
Tip! Area Selection charges are a useful way to generate additional revenue from guests who prefer a specific view, location, or Area within a Category. Ensure the relevant Sundry Charge has been created and configured with the correct General Ledger Account Code and Tax Type before enabling these fees.
