This guide explains how to remove credit card and EFTPOS surcharges from each payment button in RMS POS before the Australian regulatory deadline of 1 October 2026.
Overview
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has determined that card surcharging on EFTPOS, Visa, and Mastercard transactions will end on 1 October 2026. If your property currently applies a merchant fee or surcharge to these payment methods in RMS POS, you must set the fee to zero before this date.
This applies to each payment button individually. You will need to update the settings for every affected payment type on your keyboard layout.
For full background on the regulatory change, see the RBA Surcharging Ban - What It Means for Your Property article.
Please Note! This regulation applies to Australian properties only. Properties operating outside Australia are not affected by this change and should continue to follow the surcharging regulations in their own jurisdiction.
Affected Payment Methods
The following payment methods are covered by the surcharge ban and must be updated in RMS POS:
- EFTPOS
- Visa
- Mastercard
Please Note! The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) ban applies only to surcharges on eftpos, Mastercard, and Visa cards. Surcharges on cards from other networks (such as American Express and Diners Club) are not covered by the RBA decision and do not need to be removed. For the official scope, see the RBA Conclusions Paper - Non-Technical Summary, March 2026.
Before You Begin
- You must have access to RMS POS Back Office to edit keyboard layouts.
- Identify every keyboard layout in use at your property. The merchant fee is configured per payment button, per keyboard, so each layout must be reviewed.
- If you are unsure which keyboard layouts are in use, contact RMS Support before making changes.
Removing Card Surcharges from Each Payment Button
Repeat the following steps for each affected payment button (EFTPOS, Visa, and Mastercard) on every keyboard layout in use.
-
Open the Keyboard Layout in RMS POS. Go to Back Office > Touch Settings > Keyboards and open the keyboard you want to update.
-
Open the settings for the payment button. Click the EFTPOS, Visa, or Mastercard button on the keyboard, then select More Settings on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Locate the Merchant Fees section. The button settings window will open. Find the Merchant Fees section on the right-hand side of the window.
- Set the Merchant Fee value to 0. The fee may be configured as a percentage of the total or a dollar value. Change the numeric value to 0.00.
-
Save and repeat. Click OK to save the change. Repeat steps 2 to 4 for each remaining affected payment button on every keyboard layout.
Tip! If you use the Display merchant fees before Finalising option, you may also want to disable it once all surcharges are set to zero. This avoids displaying a 0.00 fee to guests at the point of sale.
