This article explains the discount hierarchy on the RMS Booking Engine and how different discount types take precedence over one another.
Overview
The RMS Booking Engine applies a discount hierarchy to prevent confusion caused by multiple discount types conflicting or stacking unexpectedly during the booking journey.
When a guest is eligible for more than one type of discount, the Booking Engine applies only the highest-priority discount and suppresses any lower-priority discounts automatically. This ensures guests receive a clear, predictable price without unexpected combinations.
Discount Hierarchy
The following pyramid shows the order in which discounts take precedence on the RMS Booking Engine. The highest-priority discount is at the top. When a higher-priority discount is active, all lower-priority discounts are suppressed.

Discount Types

| 1 | Promo Code | A guest enters a valid promo code before adding a room to the cart. Auto Discounts are suppressed. |
| 2 | Membership Discount | A guest is logged in as a member of any supported membership program. The member rate or member discount is applied and Auto Discounts are suppressed. |
| 3 | Rate Type Promo | A Rate Type has a promo automatically attached to it. When the guest selects that Rate Type, the promo is applied and Auto Discounts are suppressed. |
| 4 | Auto Discount | Auto Discounts are applied only when no Promo Code, Membership Discount, or Rate Type Promo is active on the room. |
How It Works
- When a guest enters a Promo Code, the promo code field is hidden for members who are logged in, as the membership discount takes priority over manually entered promos in a different way - membership and promo codes are mutually exclusive inputs.
- If a guest removes a Promo Code after it was applied, the system re-evaluates discount eligibility. If no other promo or membership condition is active, Auto Discounts are applied.
- When a guest has multiple rooms in the cart, the hierarchy is applied per room. A room with a promo applied will not receive Auto Discounts, while a room without any promo or membership discount will receive Auto Discounts as normal.
